Ruth Roman is the youngest daughter of Lithuanian and Jewish parents Mary Pauline Gold (Gold) and Abraham Roman in Lynn, Massachusetts. As a young girl the father was a carnival barker and left her mother no option but to work as a cleaning lady and waitress in order to support her family. Ruth went to school in Boston's tenement region, which was the most deplorable. But she quit school only after two years of school to take on a acting career. It was a difficult path to pursue. Even though she got an opportunity as a hat check girl in New York posing as a writer for a mystery publication, no theatre jobs was offered. Then, she worked as a hat check girl at the nightclub before calling her quits and relocating to Boston. The city of Boston was in which she was employed during the evening as an actor for the New England Repertory Company and for the remainder of her time as an usherette. Also, she studied drama. She ultimately graduated from Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
